I am delighted to have been chosen one of the 10 artists to paint a life size horse for a sculpture trail around North Lincolnshire.
Part of North Lincolnshire Museums programme to celebrate the 300th year anniversary of the birth of George Stubbs, the trail will see 20 horse sculptures ride into the area for the “Horsing Around” Sculpture Trail
I’m thrilled that my horse is going to be residing in Horkstow. George Stubbs needed to find “a remote farmhouse “ to carry out his dissections due to the smell and mess caused by the decaying carcasses and he chose the village of Horkstow . This gruesome work led to the publication of “The Anatomy of the Horse “ which gave him an international reputation in science and art .
Just as Stubbs revealed the horse's physical anatomy in his dissections, 'Spirit' delves into the horse's emotional anatomy. Horses, as sentient beings, possess an empathetic ability to process and mirror emotions. They amplify our joy, absorb our grief, feel our pain, and react to our fear. They respond to our kindness and frustration, carrying these emotions in their bodies as we do.
The sculpture's layers are embedded with an emotional code, featuring over 50 words inscribed on its surface. These words, reflecting the vast range of emotions horses evoke in us, were gathered from diverse sources, including my workshop with Scunthorpe Arts Society, a professional jockey, an animal healer, and personal experiences.
